Oakton, VA, December 19, 2012 / -- AT&T Government Solutions* has been awarded a Trusted Handheld Platform contract by the U.S. Marine Corps to develop and deliver trusted mobile devices.
Under the award, AT&T and its technology providers will develop 450 prototype mobile devices for testing, certification, and implementation by the Department of Defense and other stakeholders. These mobile devices will be able to send and receive highly-secure voice, video, and data across multiple security domains and wireless networks – domestic and international. Initially, the devices will run a modified version of the Android mobile operating system but have the potential to support multiple operating systems and device platforms.
The Trusted Handheld Platform was created by the U.S. Marine Corps to spur development of commercially-available mobile devices that could support secure, classified, and unsecure communications. The goal is to foster collaboration and advance the development of reliable, lowcost secure mobile solutions, making them available to Department of Defense, government agencies, and the general public to meet future communication needs.
“The military and the commercial market share a common need – a highly-secure, low-cost mobile device solution to share and manage sensitive content across their networks,” said Thomas Harvey, Senior Vice President, AT&T Government Solutions. “Our Trusted Handheld solution marries the ingenuity of commercial mobile devices with end-to-end AT&T security capabilities to meet the advanced communication needs of our customers.”
“This relationship is a great example of private sector innovation coming together to provide strategic advantages for government,” said Ed Amoroso, Senior Vice President and Chief Security Officer, AT&T. “The technology behind our security solutions originated with the AT&T Security Research Center, where a specialized team is continuously working to ensure the secure future of mobility.”
Researchers at the AT&T Security Research Center work to ensure security is an enabler, not a limitation, of mobile and cloud technology. This state-of-the-art lab is dedicated to investigating, prototyping, and testing new mobile security strategies and technologies.
AT&T has assembled a team of leading security technology providers to deliver secure mobile devices under this award, including: Green Hills Software, SafeNet, and Sequitur Labs.
